Muirhouse Community shop

Muirhouse community shop has been open in Pennywell Shopping centre since 29th April 2013, depending 100% on volunteers the shop has went from strength to strength. Below is a little more about it.

Why?

After the sudden closure of Co-op in December 2012, resident and now TRIM chairman Robert Pearson wanted to have some sort of community shop as residents were feeling the loss in many ways.

Financially

Unfortunately other shops within the centre exploited the fact the co-op had closed, residents reported paying shocking prices for what we see as essentials.

Socially

Supermarket Co-op was the hub of the centre, many residents would pop in for a pint of milk and then spend the next half hour talking to someone they had bumped in to. Well now that has gone!

How?

After discussing the idea with Link Up Worker Julie Crawford, both Julie and Robert visited a community shop in Broomhouse. Robert, was excited to say the least with what he saw, but knew it would be very challenging for Muirhouse to have a community shop.

Discussions then started between Julie Crawford ( Link Up, John MacDonald ( Edinburgh City Council), Cllr Cammy Day and Henry Cole ( Edinburgh City Council), whilst the discussions were going on, Robert, Julie and other residents cleaned and tidied out the shop, Link Up arrange for a counter to be built, new door to be fitted and before long it was beginning to look like a real shop again.
