  • I have been looking for a kids book about Easter for a while I specifically wanted one that had nothing to do with bunnies or chocolate eggs In desperation I turned to social media and posted asking if anyone could recommend a book A recommendation came back quickly for Dave the Donkey by Andrew McDonough.Dave the Donkey is a fun book that explains the Easter story to children through the eyes of the donkey who carried Jesus on Palm Sunday and his Grandpa. The language is simple and the bright pi [...]

  • Dave the donkey is dying to share the news with his grandpa He d carried a king.Grandpa comes back from Jerusalem with news of his own Good news and bad news The bad news is that the king has been killed and the good newsWell, this is the Easter story with a subtle allusion to the Christmas story It seems Grandpa once carried someone very special too. With bright cheesy grins, bulging eyes and vivid colours, the characters in this children s story come to delightful braying life Another splendid [...]

  • The Easter message of Dave the Donkey is another delightful story from the pen and paintbrush of Andrew McDonough Dave the Donkey eagerly waits for his grandpa to return from Jerusalem Dave has exciting news to share He has carried the King Grandpa then tells the tragic story of what happened next There was bad news and good news The bad news was that the King had died but the good news was that the King was now alive.

  • McDonough in his book, Dave the Donkey, tells the Easter story from the point of view of the donkey that carried Jesus on Palm Sunday This novel point of view creates the opportunity to relate the events leading up to Jesus death and resurrection McDonough cleverly uses this perspective to point out the reversal of events that happened at Easter and the unexpected outcome. The illustrations are simple yet bright and colourful Some parts of the story are told solely pictorially which makes it a go [...]

  • This is an enjoyable retelling of the Easter story from the point of view of two donkeys, Dave and his grandpa, Cecil, with colourful pictures which will appeal to small children, and vocabulary that is simple enough for slightly older readers to read with some assistance There is also a note to parents at the back, offering a way of sharing the story and suggesting some questions to ask I especially like this, as it s a way of sharing the gospel message to the adult or older child reading the b [...]

  • MY REVIEW Normally I don t like Bible accounts that are told in a cartoon style However, Dave the Donkey is different While it has a silliness about it with some of the lighthearted pictures, it also packs the simple truth of the Easter story from the perspective of a young donkey and his grandfather donkey My children quickly picked up on the real life Bible account that this book was retelling and enjoyed both the somber and joyful moments this book dealt with.As long as this is not the only b [...]
