  • Mrs tennant is not as interesting as the commercial hype surrounding the book suggests She is monochromatic in comparison to the television miniseries character with whom she is compared the duchess of downtown abbey If one desires to acquire a very bland taste of what Victorian life was like, this book will suffice Otherwise, it is unentertaining, loosely woven and does not offer up a memorable character at all The most touching if slightly melodramatic part was Gertrude the grieving widow.

  • An interesting insight into the lives of women during the Victorian era The first part of the book about Gertrude Tennant s unconventional upbringing is interesting than the latter part of her life when she hosted her salon The period was well researched but I did not find the book a gripping read.
