  • I confess that I wasn t a fan of the Paris Wife and I liked Circling the Sun even less but Love nd Ruin was a success for me Historical fiction, this novel chronicles the relationship between Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn whom he met while still married to his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer I think Gellhorn was the draw for me I ve always been fascinated by her bravery and commitment as she became a renowned war correspondent and paved the way for other female reports who followed Hemingway is po [...]

  • I didn t like The Paris Wife by this author So I wasn t sure if I d like this book But this story of the third wife of Ernest Hemingway is so different. This is a story of Martha Gellhorn, a remarkable woman who became one of the twentieth century s most significant and celebrated war correspondents, reporting on virtually every major conflict for sixty years from the Spanish Civil War to the Bay of Pigs, from Vietnam to El Salvador to Panama, where she covered the invasion at the age of eighty o [...]

  • Martha Gellhorn was Hemingway third wife and the only wife to leave him first, sort of She was a great writer in her own right and a spunky war correspondent in a time when women didnt go to hot zones She wrote great books and yet her work was constantly compared to that of her famous husband Hemingway Martha was also very beautiful and understood that Ernest charismatic pull was a very dicey situation I loved this book even than Paula McLain s first book The Paris Wife about Hemingway s first [...]

  • Paula McLain has done it again She is magnificent, I didn t want to be done reading it so I was savoring every single pageErnest Hemmingway in all of his complexities and successes was still no match for THE Martha Gellhorn, a woman that didn t let anything or anyone get in the way of what she was meant to do An incredible portrait of the things relationships can steal from you if you allow it to happen, and what happens when you are determined to stay true to yourself, no matter what I already [...]

  • Paula McLain finds the most interesting women and illuminates them through such meticulous research Martha Gellhorn is perhaps the best example of this to date How in the world did I not know about this remarkable person, this strong, intelligent woman who is so seemingly overshadowed by a man not only during her own time, but throughout the time since It s very likely that this is a case of the right book at the right time for me, but I have a feeling that I won t be the only one So many of Mar [...]

  • Where do I even start with this novel I had a hard time getting into it At around chapter 4 I had to check to make sure I was reading this and not something else After that, it really picked up I enjoyed the Paris Wife, but it left me feeling empty Love and Ruin made me angry and sad, in all the best ways I m not the biggest fan of Ernest Hemingway to begin with I think he was a misogynist alcoholic who was full of himself This novel made him empathetic, to an extent I loved Martha and how she w [...]

  • Another winner by Paula McLain, this novel tells the fascinating story of Martha Gellhorn, better known as one of Hemingway s wives, yet a fascinating and adventurous writer in her own right I enjoyed learning about all of her wartime reporting and what an exciting life she lived apart from her famous husband and then ex husband.

  • I really enjoyed this book Loved reading about the relationship between Hemingway and Gellhorn She was a wonderfully strong protagonist, way before her time Novel was filled with war, drama and romance, with wonderful locales

  • Martha Gellhorn is reeling from her father s death when she enters a bar with her family and her life is changed They meet Ernest Hemingway and become friends As Martha is an author and journalist she is very aware of Ernest Hemingway and his prominence in the literary world When he encourages her to go to Spain to cover the Civil War she can t refuse and finds a way to make it happen There they become colleagues and lovers This is the story of their tempestuous love and how what drew Ernest to [...]

  • Paula McClain truly wraps and weaves you into the world of Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn with her newest novel, Love and Ruin.Marty Gellhorn is a woman of courage and tenacity She is a writer by trade and throws her all into her work She is continuously let down by the men in her life, including her distant father, who sees her work and love life as self destructive After her father passes away, Marty and family travel to Key West They meet Ernest Hemingway at a local bar by chance, and h [...]

  • Paula McLain is back with a vengeance Her next book, Love and Ruin is about to be released and it is awesome I love her work and this tale does not disappoint This is the story of Martha Marty Gellhorn, a talented World War II war correspondent and author She was also Ernest Hemingway s third wife The novel covers the tumultuous years of her life that she spent with Ernest as she struggled to be recognized for her own talent and to be the wife to a man who was very talented but also very trouble [...]

  • This book is fictionalized story about the life of Martha Gellhorn, who was the third life of Ernest Hemingway Martha is an adventurous, courageous writer who travels to war zones to report on the state of affairs in the hopes that telling these stories can bring change and enlightenment to the world.Martha meets Hemingway while she is on vacation with her mother and brother, trying to work through her father s death He recognizes her and knows her work and takes her in and shows her family all [...]

  • I m prefacing this review by mentioning that I loved McLain s previous two novels In fact, I m planning on going back to re read them now that I ve finished Love and Ruin. With that being said, Love and Ruin was not my favorite novel by Paula McLain I ve learned that Ernest Hemingway was a masochistic alcoholic He wanted a trite housewife with no life, as we saw in The Paris Wife Martha Gelhourn was even outgoing and adventurous with a serious case of wanderlust than Hadley She was a writer firs [...]

  • Paula McLain has returned to Ernest Hemingway, specifically to his third wife Martha Gellhorn Her first novel, Paris Wife, describes Hadley and her marriage to Hemingway.I was not a big fan of that book but I really enjoyed Ms McLain s second book Circling the Sun.This, however, is a very good story It traces the relationship of Hemingway and Gellhorn from their meeting in 1936 to the end of the Second World War in 1945 A historical novel that follows Gellhorn from war zones in Spain s fall to [...]

  • Read in prepub Paula McLain writes biographically based fiction like a champ You truly get a sense of the people without a lot of dry historical exposition McLain weaves the history into the story in a very organic and entertaining way If you loved The Paris Wife, you will love this, especially if you were hoping Pauline would get hers for sabotaging Hadley and Hem s marriage Martha Gellhorn is so interesting and complex and not perfect you almost wish McLain had left Hemingway as a footnote rat [...]

  • In this book, Paula McLain did an amazing job bringing Martha Gellhorn to life I enjoyed this book mostly because of the scenes with Martha writing and at war It was very powerful to get these glimpses of her struggles and successes I do think that those parts of the book were overshadowed by her, admittedly consuming, relationship with Hemingway I feel like for a woman who didn t want to be a footnote in Hemingway s life, this book focused far on her connection to him than with her other succe [...]

  • I have always been captivated by Ernest Hemingway I have read Hemingway and many books about him and his life and his four wives Love and Ruin is so well written It speaks intensely and passionately about the tumultuous relationship between Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway Balancing the difficulty of such a mutually intense love with that of one s own desires and adventures and dreams, begs the question, can it actually be accomplished To demand so much of each other and yet, to be true to o [...]

  • Hemingway and WWII there s not much else I want in a novel This was well written, and several sentences made me pause to admire the diction McLain has a way of giving enough detail to make me feel like I am in the location of the character, but not so much detail that my imagination can t take over a bit too Quite atmospheric, just the way I like it I didn t know much about Gellhorn before this book, but I am definitely going to read some of her works now.

  • This follows Hemingway s pursuit and relationship with his third wife Marty I loved her character She is ambitious, talented and way ahead of her time The story follows the balance of their careers, wars, Hemmingways divorce, and the rockiness of their marriage in the face of those obstacles and their clashing desires.

  • This book was a great reminder that no matter how much you love someone you can t let yourself down Remember, he may be very dreamy, but you are the sunIt s a beautiful thing to be able to read a book and get lost in it, you can dive right in and learn about history and love and yourself The history in the book was excellent, first class historical fiction.

  • 4.5 stars I am a fan of Paula McLain and of Hemingway, and now I am of Martha Gellhorn as well I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Martha, who just happened to be Hem s 3rd wife She was also an incredibly courageous, talented and strong female writer Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy McLain makes these people come alive on the page

  • A great story about the marriage of Martha Gellhorn and Hemingway Spent lots of time looking things up about the Spanish Civil War, Cuba and Hemingway s cats who figure heavily in the story It s historical fiction, so clearly there is heavy use of the poetic license, but very interesting and well written.

  • What a wonderful book The story of Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway, it reads like a memoir Marte was probably the most noted war correspondent of the 20th century, from the 30 s to Vietnam Paula McLain is fantastic writer, definitely worth reading.

  • A gorgeous, sweeping, escapist historical fiction full of war, drama, and exotic locales Gellhorn is a vivid and modern protagonist, though I felt that I never got as close to Hemingway as I wanted to be.

  • I liked The Paris Wife, and loved Circling the Sun, but I can t get through this one The storytelling seems flat and uninspired.

  • McLain has written a stunning historical fiction of the relationship between Ernest Hemingway and his third wife, Martha Gellhorn Absolutely fabulous story Once I began I couldn t put it down

  • Thank you to Giveaways for sending me an Advance Reader s Edition of Love and Ruin by Paula McLain My hat goes off to Ballatine Books for publishing quality works A full review will follow when I have finished reading Thanks, again.

  • I loved the Paris Wife, and the author once again tackles one of Hemingway s Wives, but this one did not hold my attention like the first I could walk away from it, and then come back which I could not do with The Paris WIfe I have visited both of Hemingway s homes in Key West and outside of Havana, and I have spent time in Madrid, and that made the book somewhat interesting to me, but the setting never became a part of the story in the same way that Paris did in the first one There was much ref [...]
