  • I really enjoyed reading some crime fiction sent outside the typical three locales UK US Scandinavia However, this became the basis of both the positive and negative aspects of the book The writing was good and the plot solid, the author made some interesting choices and used the Tokyo city background well Some of the signalling was quite strong, but overall the mechanics of the novel were well oiled and smooth The aspects I found difficult to deal with were either authorial or cultural I don t [...]

  • Ummmmmmmmmm no The Silent Dead is my first foray into Japanese crime fiction, and I want to be critical without sounding like I m a silly Westerner that just doesn t get other culture But like I might not get this culture Sorry The overall technical parts of the novel were done well The writing, even in translation, was well written and effective, never confusing or obviously translated The crime was interesting, different, and, while maybe a tad unreal in how it was solved I guess when police h [...]

  • A decent 3.5 stars I can see why Strawberry Night by Tetsuya Honda is so popular in Japan, the writing is solid, the story is intriguing with a lot of gross and violence and the characters are finely written I really like how the author described the mentality of different police detectives and how different police teams had to work together to catch the serial killer, despite of the rivalry and arguments among the detectives What I don t like is the heroine s backstory view spoiler So she has t [...]

  • Books 308 2016 3 of 5 stars In such a fine day, there is a man corpse being founded wrapped with blue plastic, some cutting in throat and also incisions in the stomach Lieutnant Reiko Himekawa from Homicide have to found who is the culprit is The situations getting worse when another 9 victims being founded as the same way the first victims Will she reveal behind the truth is Actually i don t wanna set any high expectation to read this pieces However, i can t stand to compare with Keigo Higashin [...]

  • I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.Okay, this is a book I really wanted to like A murder mystery set in Tokyo, a secret society website, and all sorts of intense office politics seem to make this one right up my alley Unfortunately, it didn t quite pan out that way.The book is well written and the mystery is fascinating, but the thing that drove me up the wall is that the characters, every single one of them, are so looking for the right word robotic Yeah, robot [...]

  • I will put my hands up straightaway and confess that my prior reading, and knowledge of, Japanese crime fiction is rudimentary at best, so please forgive any noticeable faux pas or misunderstandings on my part of the genre So here we have Raven s first introduction into this potentially interesting subgenre of crime fiction writing Shining a light into the contemporary sinister recesses of the dark web, The Silent Dead, is the first of Honda s ongoing crime series featuring Reiko Himekawa, a Hom [...]

  • 3,5 starsPhew, glad I am done with this book This story was not bad, but I had my problems with a few things The summary sounded very intriguing and the cover was not like what I usually see when it comes to a book of the crime or thriller genre And the fact, that the author is one of Japan s bestselling authors made me even curious So I read it and here is my review This book is the first I ve read by the author And to be honest I am not sure if I will continue with this series Yes, it was ver [...]

  • The Silent Dead is book one of the Reiko Himekawa series by Tetsuya Honda Reiko Himekawa is the head of Tokyo Homicide Squad and caught a case of a body found wrap in plastic At first, no one in Tokyo Homicide Squad understood the crime until Reiko Himekawa discovery something that broke the case wide open The Readers of The Silent Dead will follow Tetsuya Honda to find what she discovered and the consequences to others I found The Silent Dead slow and hard to follow However, I did enjoy reading [...]

  • This excellent and complicated Japanese police procedural is by the prolific Tetsuya Honda prolific but not yet much translated into English It begins as a routine murder case then morphs into what seems to be a search for a serial killer and then very disturbingly becomes much The edition I read includes a cast of characters list which can be helpful when initially sorting everyone out The memorable protagonist is Reiko Himekawa, a Tokyo Homicide lieutenant who, a 29 year old woman in a man s [...]

  • Thriller set in TOKYOThe Silent Dead is not for the faint hearted It is Tokyo noir at its best and most gruesome.A series of twelve quite mind bogglingly evil and brutal murders threatens to confound the police The investigation is led by Reiko Himekawa, an unusually young and female Lieutenant in the murder squad of Tokyo City Police She has very little to go on possibly a connection to the second Sunday evening of the month, and possibly a dark web reference to Strawberry Night She, herself, w [...]

  • Serial murders in TokyoThis is the first Japanese police procedural novel I ve read and I thoroughly enjoyed it Also, kudos to Giles Murray for the translation into English.I wondered at first whether I would enjoy this novel First of all, at the front of the book, is a listing of Cast of Characters I knew I was going to have problems keeping track of the characters because of the unfamiliar names But actually it wasn t too bad at all The author, as she wrote, helped keep track of the characters [...]

  • I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review Thank you, St Martin s Press To readers who, like me, enjoy reading about strong female detectives, I give you Lt Reiko Himekawa from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police s Homicide Division Reiko is the detective that you d want to investigate your murder resourceful, stubborn and smart She may even be wired like the guys she hunts, so when she takes the inquiry of a dead body found in a park, she quickly discovers that there are 1 [...]

  • 3.5 Stars.Oof This was a TOUGH read The Silent Dead was my first foray into Japanese Crime Fiction and it was definitely an assault on both my senses and my decidedly Western sensibilities I enjoyed that.Normally I read SciFi, and when I m not doing that I read Scandinavian Crime Fiction, because Scandinavia is so far from my my world that it might as well be SciFi I figured Japanese Noir was the next logical step, but I don t think I knew what I was in for.First off, if you re reading this as a [...]

  • 2.5 ish.Mild spoilers ahead While I may I grade the first in a mystery series rather harshly, I m usually willing to read the next book if a character or element strikes me as intriguing, and this newish Japanese police detective series is no exception While I found a lot to dismiss in The Silent Dead a whole passel of police stereotypes a gratuitously violent scene involving a naked, bound woman a sexual assault in the main character s background that, again, seems gratuitous rather than revela [...]

  • The Silent Dead fell so very flat it probably burried itself in the ground. The premise is a joke the characters were shallow the plot boring Trust me when I say that finally finishing this book was the best part of the experience. This book is advertising a tough female cop, who s getting shit done The cover itself says She will make them speak But whom will she make speak, I wonder And when Where Certainly not in The Silent Dead, no Our heroine, Himekawa Reiko, doesn t get anything done at all a [...]

  • I would like to thank Netgalley and St Martin s Press for an advance copy of The Silent Dead, a police procedural set in Tokyo As I understand it this is the first novel in a series and the first to be translated into English which is a bonus as it will provide continuity too many series are translated out of order and it s hard to keep track.Reiko Himekawa is the youngest lieutenant in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and a woman to boot so she has plenty to prove, especially as she is an instinct [...]

  • Please check out all of my reviews at ultraviolentlit I would recommend Tetsuya Honda s novel to any fans of crime fiction, especially because the Japanese setting provides an exciting new location for the genre something different from the recent onslaught of Scandinavian crime novels While it is not a genre that I usually read, I couldn t help but be drawn in to the life and career of Detective Reiko Himekawa, a twenty nine year old female lieutenant in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police s Homicide [...]

  • The Silent Dead Sutoroberi Naito by Tetsuya Honda la bambola 2017 09 27 the The vast world of literature has yet so many uncharted areas, waiting for me to explore them oh, how I wish one could just give up the habit of sleeping Among the genres, on which I m definitely no expert, crime fiction so hyped these days is in the lead It s not like I ve never read a crime novel, or that I don t like them, rather the contrary, if I do happen to get my hands on such a book I tend to enjoy the story And [...]

  • The Silent Dead is my first foray into crime thrillers based in Japan I ve read lots of crime books, but this is my first based in Asia and it was a promising introduction Not least because there are books in the series which I would definitely be interested in reading if and when they are translated. The intro to The Silent Dead is quite gruesome, and sets the scene for further on in the book Detective Reiko Himekawa is tasked with the investigations and as the body count rises, the evidence mo [...]

  • This book was pretty good for me I was concerned about the names of the characters in the book because they were so unfamiliar to me But the author made me very comfortable with the that and I was delighted to read something a little different and I enjoyed it For me the characters were wonderful and the story was entertaining I enjoyed it I received this book from Net galley in exchange for an honest review

  • I give up I can t take it any This thing is rather horrible No idea why it was a bestseller in Japan, looks like their taste is very different from mine I made it up to page 130, but that s it The way this abstruse story was told gave me problems from the beginning, but when Reiko started slapping her colleague, that was bad enough Then there was the talk between her and this other inspector or whatever and now I m done.

  • When a body is discovered wrapped in blue tarp Lt Reiko Himekawa and her team investigate Whether the attitudes of the characters, and the process of the investigation is truly Japanese I don t know but I didn t like either I find quite a lot of the writing stilted, whether this is the writing style or translation problems is also unknown.
