  • I should probably begin this review with a confession I ve never even owned a smartphone Not because I can t afford one, or because I m a technophobe or a neo Luddite of some kind In fact, I am fascinated by technology and quite adept at learning using it I think it s fair to say that technology has gone a long way toward enhancing our lives over the past century But, like Bess, I also hold certain reservations against whole heartedly embracing every single aspect of new technologies to come our [...]

  • Our Grandchildren Redesigned offers a comprehensive and balanced look at the inevitable future of human enhancement Unlike some futurists, who tend to approach these issues with a strong pro enhancement or anti enhancement bias, Michael Bess brings an unwaveringly pragmatic viewpoint to the subject matter His thesis is that our best hope for integrating enhancements into our society, without creating undesirable gaps between the haves and have nots, compromising our values, or losing touch with [...]

  • There have been plenty of books about human enhancement the pros, cons and possibilities so Make Way for the Super Humans Our Grandchildren Redesigned in the US needed to do something quite different, and I am pleased to say that it does. The opening section is fairly standard fare, describing the basic possibilities for pharmaceuticals, bioelectronics and genetics epigenetics to change the nature of humans and human life, plus a bonus chapter on what Michael Bess refers to as wild cards nanotech [...]

  • Going beyond medical hot topics, such as bionics and stem cell research, Bess delves into the biotechnologies that will boost human capabilities through pharmaceuticals, advanced technologies and genetic modifications that will be able to produce superhuman capabilities Society of the Near Future is not primarily about those new technologies, although much time is spent explaining the new advances in medical science that will enable humans to outperform their ancestors Of the utmost importance h [...]

  • The idea that humans will can change themselves to have longer lives, or to be smarter, or any single thing they want is not new, but the author imerge completely in this new world. How the states will can regulate human rights if a person can be half human half cat, or 90% human 10% cat How it will can avoid modifications that are potentially risky not only for the organism changed but also to the all the people or big parts of the ecosystem We will choose liberty or security when everything is [...]

  • Anyone who s paying attention will realize we re facing major advances in biotechnology that will increasingly empower us to change ourselves in ways that heretofore have only been dreamed about So who doesn t want to live a longer, healthier life Who doesn t want a child to reach his or her full potential But just what is that potential and how do we decide what kind of tinkering is okay and what is not What happens when some people can afford modification and others can only wish What happens [...]

  • Our Grandchildren REDESIGNED Life in the Bioengineered Society of the Near Future was not what I thought it would be, it was very detailed going into all of the different ways in the future that our future humans can possibly be bioengineered I was expecting a fictional work my fault , but the author did a very good job of explaining and hypothesizing what our future will be like Not going to extremes, because there is so much that people do to their bodies now and micro technology is coming upo [...]

  • First half is fascinating Imaginative fictional openings to some of the chapters projections of what could be to come also most welcome Lost my interest somewhat when it becomes a scold and fades into generalizations and chapters that feel like they re fleshing out an early outline Excellent overview, tho, of bio enhancements and a nice compilation of research Bess also has a compelling ability to see surprising connections in literature and history with his subject.

  • A lot of basic assumptions about equality of opportunity will likely be challenged explicitly than ever over the next few decades, and this book gives an interesting overview of how this might happen

  • Very interesting ideas If you like speculation on the future, and educated theories of what is in our immediate future, I think you ll like this book. This was a giveaway.

  • I was looking for a deeper, bioethical discussion of the issues When I realized that was not where this book was going, I lost interest p 42.
