  • Read it in one day, which apparently means I have a lot of time on my hands I LOVED it The setting was fascinating and the characters were really new and interesting to me I ran out and got all her other books in English, then wrote a letter to her publisher to translate , because that s easier than learning to read Danish.I met Sara at a crime festival in Denmark a few years ago The festival was held in an old prison, but when we pulled into the parking lot, I literally thought we were at a hig [...]

  • The very idea of Honor Killingsat the recalcitrant actions of one person could lead another family member to commit murder.les the mind Even though our society seems to have lost all concept of Shame and or Honore thought of Murder for Honor makes me blench Not to mention the fact that, according to this book, most Honor Killings are perpetrated my members of the Extended Familyose living outside the country where the Killing took placeAll of which is Nice Good.except , in the case of this book, [...]

  • I have a quibble with the publication of these bookse first one still has not been published in English, the publishers put out a later books as her first one I like to read books in order as character develops and history of the main characters is established This is common with Scandinavian mysteries, I have waited ages for enough books to be published to be able to follow this series as properly as I can, and just got an Anne Holt s Hannah Wilhelmsen book which allows me to read them in prope [...]

  • Denmark has been in the news fairly often lately for conflicts between ethnic Danes and the immigrant Muslim population This police procedural puts this cultural tension in sharp relief, providing an engaging way to glean insights into the clash of civilizations now occurring in the West and particularly in Europe.Louise Rick, a 37 year old Inspector with the Copenhagen homicide investigation unit, receives a temporary reassignment to the elite Mobile Task Force A young Muslim girl has been murd [...]

  • First Line She could just make out the blue flashes between the densely grown tree trunks, but she couldn t see how many police vehicles were at the scene.Inspector Louise Rick is called in to help local Danish police with a drowning that s anything but ordinary Samra, a young immigrant girl, has been found in Holbraek Fjord, a large slab of concrete tied around her waist and mysterious circular marks on the back of her neck.Samra s life was short and sad, with a father who d already been charge [...]

  • This was a slow paced police procedural that frequently dealt with the private lives of the investigators than the crimes they were trying to solve The murder of a teenage girl of Jordanian descent is suspected of being an honour killing Then, however, her best friend a white Danish girl is also murdered with similar strange marks found on her body. There s no doubt the novel is well researched and well intended and it does deal with the thorny issue of the clash between Islamic and European cul [...]

  • Only One Life by Danish author Sara Blaedel is not so much a whodunit, I wouldn t even say it s a whydunit it is, to put it gently, a what the heck happened kind of book This is one of those novels that have many layers The first layer is made of facts, the second of hidden truths, the third is composed primarily by lies, the fourth talks about the social background and so forth. As in her previous outstanding novel Call Me Princess, Blaedel is interested in exploring the tortured psyches of her [...]

  • Louise Rick is investigating a murder A teen girl Samra was found dead and it looks like it may have been an honor killingbut her father was clearly devastated when Samra s body was identified and her mom swears that her husband didn t harm her daughter Well, okay, he COULD do it, but he DIDN T Then Samra s friend, the one who indirectly identified the body by telling police her friend was missing, was found murdered Louise is unsure exactly who s telling the truth and who s to blame for Samra s [...]

  • The female police officer is back in Sara Bl del s third volume titled Only one life. This time Louise Rick is willing to move to Holb k temporarily to investigate a dead girl case The residents of this small town, which is located far west of Copenhagen, were in shock after a girl was found floating in the nearby river. What even worse is the fact that the girl had a middle eastern ancestry and was a Muslim, a combination of identities that often were frowned upon in Denmark Soon and sure enough, [...]

  • I am not smitten with this book and I think that is partially the writing style and partially the cultural barriers Having read the description, one might think I was referring to Muslim cultural barriers, but it was actually the Danish ones with which I had issues Everyone in the novel, from the police to the press to the neighbors kept calling the family immigrants and while that is technically the correct term for them, it was the connotation that I found irksome Perhaps because the United St [...]

  • I don t read that many detective novels, but I did enjoy this book I enjoyed it for many reasons I liked the intelligent storyline I enjoyed the many characters the main detective, the victims and the various victims families And I enjoyed reading a novel from a foreign novelist where I was able to get to know a bit about a different country the Netherlands It s always nice to get to see a different cultural perspective, see the different issues that are raised, get to know different geographic [...]

  • Unfortunately, I can t say I liked this novel Because I didn t As it gets better as it progresses, it s still a one dimensional effort, showing very shallow research on its main selling point honor killings There is no narration make from the Arabic family whatsoever, that would ve highlighted the struggle of living in Occident, coming from the Middle East, which is so heavily rooted into religion and tradition Blaedel always stops her character at saying Well, this is a cultural difference and [...]

  • This is among the worst books I have ever read On a pure plot level, the main character seems to be a terrible detective SPOILERS The entire police force basically assumes without evidence from the get go that the victim was killed by a member of her own family, simply because she s a Muslim and so called honor killings are something that occur in some corners of the Arab world They spend HALF the book trying to get the girl s family to confess to an honor killing and then it turns out that it w [...]

  • In my survey of Scandanavian writers limiting the set books to those which are not based on an act of horrific sexual violence on a woman, this book rates high I liked the female protagonist, and in fact there are two A journalist as well Which is an effective way to have two sets of lens on the same story and frankly, I m surprised mystery writers don t employ it often This tale sensitively, with apparent research by the writer, included the story of a killing caught up in the politics of poss [...]

  • This was a total waste of time and patience I thought the theme culture clash and a possible honor killing might be interesting I m sure it could be in another setting, but this telling of it was unbelievably boring I figured out the likely murderer soon after he was presented, and most of the moti e The plotting is moderately okay, but the entire gallery of characters are unsympathetic I think I m done with this author for good now.

  • I read Forgotten Girls earlier this year and I became a fan Danish author Sara Blaedel writes relevant detective stories This book published a few years ago deals with a timely issue of Arab family living in a western community I really enjoyed this who dunnit story.

  • Not as good as the other two books with Louise Rick in them I found the story a bit scattered and didn t really see the point of having Camilla journalist, and friend of Louise in it Yes, she added some facts about honour killings and balanced that with information about other killings, similar in nature in the community, that were unrelated to the Muslim community Other than that, no purpose whatsoever.A young girl is found murdered Her best friend, Dicta, believes this was an honour killing, w [...]

  • I never felt engaged by the characters A few times the main character a cop gets information like the autopsy report or finally notices something and you wonder if the full crew of cops working on the case are incompetent since it is something they should have looked into long ago I also hate it when the author so obviously leads the reader astray major red herring.

  • Quick read, very readable Interesting on tensions in Danish society and cultural conflicts within immigrant communities, especially for the young I like the main character although I wonder whether her close friendship with a reporter might not be a disadvantage in her work, and I wasn t wholly convinced by the murderer s motives.

  • Interesting look at the inside of the Muslim culture contrasted with the Danish one The points of exploration are how families are connected, how sex is viewed, and how individuals handle pain, grief and stress There is no easy winner there are just different ways of approaching and living with culture and norms Fast read.

  • This book was perfectly acceptable, but I can t help thinking it would have benefited from having fewer characters The flood of people introduced in the first couple of pages was a bit overwhelming And I can t help thinking that perhaps it lost something in the translation Some passages were a bit clunky.I would read Sara Blaedel books, but perhaps not just at the moment.

  • Success of the book sold a lot probably depends on attracts attention to cultural differences, but failed to reflect true nature of eastern ways Not much of mystery too, i knew the murderer at the first mention of it in the book

  • Another solid novel by Ms Blaedel I was pleasantly surprised that I didn t figure out the whole mystery by the endlove a good twist in the plot Will be digging around on to find book 3 in English

  • A young immigrant girl is found dead with a piece of concrete tied around her waist in the water Detective Louise Rick is called in to investigate the murder in a small town west of Copenhagen There are rumours of honour killing, family strife and the problems being an immigrant in Danish life.

  • Louise Rick has been reassigned to the Unit One Mobile Task Force, an elite division of the National Police force, to investigate the murder of Samra Al Abd This reassignment requires her to temporarily relocate to Holbaek where the body was found Louise has the opportunity to reconnect with a former partner, Soren Velis, and meet new officers including Mik Rasmussen, her new partner for this case The investigation reveals that the Al Abd family has had problems, with the mother and children bri [...]
